THE 5 BIGGEST PAIN POINTS
1. Poor quality of master data
2. Insufficient capacities
3. Ambitious project/time planning
4. Adoption of existing legacy processes without customization
5. Underestimated complexity of the project
For many companies, the transition to SAP S/4HANA is inevitable—but for the CFO, this involves more than just a system change. It’s about accelerated closings (Fast Close), harmonized FI/CO structures, fewer manual reconciliations, and full transparency regarding earnings, working capital, and cash. SAP S/4HANA replaces the predecessor system SAP ECC, whose mainstream maintenance expires at the end of 2027. An extension until 2030 is possible, but comes with additional costs.
When implemented correctly, the migration becomes a finance transformation program with a direct impact on management quality, real-time reporting, cash forecasting, and audit assurance. The simplification of the data model, integrated processes, and real-time capabilities lay the foundation for well-informed management decisions.
As part of the transformation, AI functionalities—such as the SAP Copilot Joule—can be specifically leveraged to boost efficiency. AI supports project teams within the system with navigation, analysis, and test execution, thereby reducing project effort without replacing subject-matter expertise. This ensures that the S/4HANA transformation is not only technically implemented but also designed to be efficient and future-oriented.
As part of the S/4HANA transformation, master data is streamlined, harmonized, and managed in a sustainable manner, resulting in a consistent and audit-proof data foundation. The targeted use of AI supports the automated identification of duplicates and inconsistencies, sustainably improves data quality, and enhances the reliability of reporting, planning, and compliance in FI/CO.
By seamlessly integrating the end-to-end data value chain, business processes can be streamlined and optimized, leading to increased productivity and cost efficiency.
SAP S/4HANA offers a wide range of deployment options—whether on-premises, in a private cloud, or in the public cloud—to meet your company’s specific needs.
SAP S/4HANA offers a high degree of flexibility, allowing it to adapt dynamically to specific business requirements.
Thanks to the powerful SAP HANA database and the simplified data model featuring the Universal Journal (ACDOCA), the system not only enables high-performance data storage but also real-time analysis of information. Loading times are also shorter, allowing data to be retrieved and processed more quickly. Media breaks and reconciliation efforts between financial and controlling data are reduced, significantly increasing transparency, the speed of financial closing, and management control.
The intuitive design of the SAP Fiori user interface makes it easy and intuitive to use the applications, which simplifies the use of SAP S/4HANA.

After completing the Master Data Readiness phase, we will launch the actual project phases in a structured manner in accordance with SAP Activate.
In the “Discover” phase, we establish the strategic foundation for your SAP S/4HANA transformation. Working with you, we define the target vision, the business case, and the appropriate transformation approach (e.g., Greenfield, Brownfield, or Selective Data Transition). We conduct a high-level analysis of the existing system and process landscape and identify key areas for action, risks, and opportunities. The goal of this phase is to develop a sound basis for decision-making and a clear transformation strategy.
During the “Prepare” phase, we establish the organizational and methodological framework for the project. This includes defining the project governance, role and responsibility structures, resource planning, and the creation of a detailed project plan. The goal is to establish a stable project structure and ensure a smooth start to the technical implementation.
During the “Explore” phase, we conduct a comprehensive fit-gap analysis to align your specific business requirements with SAP best-practice processes. Based on this, we create detailed business blueprints and define the future target processes. We also finalize the data migration plan and define the functional requirements for customizing and enhancements. In addition, we support you in planning and implementing effective change management strategies to ensure that your employees can successfully navigate the transition.
During the “Realize” phase, we work closely with your IT implementation team to drive the implementation forward. We develop a comprehensive testing strategy that covers all business processes and create detailed test cases to enable structured business validation by the business unit and to ensure system stability. In addition, we support you in creating and reviewing the cutover plan to ensure a smooth transition to the new SAP system. Our experts also oversee the unit and integration tests to ensure that your SAP system functions optimally.
During the “Deploy” phase, we support you through the cut-over, go-live, and production launch, ensuring that your SAP system operates optimally. We assist you in implementing the cut-over plan to ensure a smooth migration to production. In addition, we offer comprehensive end-user training to ensure your employees are familiar with the new system. Finally, we guide you through the production migration, data validation, and go-live to ensure a seamless transition, allowing your company to immediately reap the benefits of your new SAP system while ensuring high data quality. We also ensure that during the “deployment” phase, appropriate documentation is created for external or internal stakeholders (e.g., external audit bodies) that meets specific requirements.
During the “Run” phase, we support you following a successful go-live and ensure the system’s stability to quickly identify and resolve any issues that may arise. In addition, we actively address post-go-live issues and ensure that your system is continuously optimized. Our team is also available to provide ongoing business support, assisting with critical issues and ensuring the long-term sustainability of your business operations.
Along with the switch to SAP S/4HANA for your ERP system, you should also consider the necessary implementation of IFRS 18 and the resulting changes to the presentation of the income statement in the system, as well as the underlying processes involved.
Mainstream Maintenance for SAP ECC 6.0 will continue through the end of 2027. Optionally, Extended Maintenance can be purchased through the end of 2030, though this involves additional costs.
After 2030, only Customer Specific Maintenance may be available. This is generally more expensive and comes with a significantly limited scope of services.
Our recommendation: Companies should use the remaining time strategically and define a clear migration strategy toward SAP S/4HANA early on. Timely planning reduces risks, avoids unnecessary additional costs, and creates room for a structured transformation.
SAP S/4HANA can be deployed as a public cloud, private cloud, or on-premise solution. The public cloud is based on highly standardized, predefined business processes and enables rapid implementation with regular innovations through automatic updates. The scope for individual customization is intentionally limited to ensure stability and upgradeability. On-premise, on the other hand, offers maximum control and extensive customization options, but requires greater responsibility regarding infrastructure, maintenance, and innovation cycles.
The private cloud combines the strategic focus on SAP’s cloud architecture with significantly greater flexibility. Companies that need to map complex or established process landscapes—particularly in the FI/CO environment—gain expanded options for customization and individual configurations without sacrificing the benefits of cloud operations. It thus represents a balanced approach between standardization and necessary customization for many transformation projects.
SAP S/4HANA 2025 is the current on-premise major release. On-premise versions follow a two-year release cycle, with each major release receiving seven years of extended mainstream maintenance. In addition, feature packs are released regularly within this cycle, enabling functional enhancements without requiring a full system upgrade. This enables continuous innovation without requiring a full upgrade for every new feature.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud (Public and Private Edition), on the other hand, follows a continuous innovation model with regular, SAP-managed updates. Here, innovations are delivered in shorter release cycles as part of standardized update processes.
The added value lies not in the automated design of FI/CO processes, but in the increased efficiency within the project. AI reduces the time spent on searching, accelerates the understanding of system logic, supports testing, and facilitates knowledge transfer.
Even modest time savings in the analysis, testing, or coordination phases can lead to significant reductions in project duration and costs for large-scale transformation programs.
AI features such as the SAP Copilot Joule can help users identify relevant apps, functions, or configuration areas more quickly. Depending on the release version, system configuration, and operating model (e.g., cloud or on-premise), the AI can provide context-sensitive suggestions for suitable Fiori apps or corresponding configuration paths. Instead of manually navigating through Fiori apps or technical configuration structures, project participants can, for example, ask:
The specific nature of this support depends on the system and release. The goal is to reduce search and coordination efforts within the project and to make it easier to navigate the system.
Yes, AI can make it easier to navigate the system, especially during testing and validation phases. For example, project members can ask:
The AI guides users to the correct application and explains basic process steps. This makes the testing process more structured and allows new team members to get up to speed more quickly.
AI can categorize system messages by function and explain possible causes. For example, if a tester receives a posting error message, the AI can explain what it means and which configuration areas it typically relates to (e.g., field status group, posting block, or account type).
This speeds up root cause analysis and reduces unnecessary coordination between business units and IT.
In the context of transformation and migration projects, AI can clearly summarize conceptual differences between SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA. Examples include:
This supports workshops and business concepts but does not replace a detailed business analysis.
With a cloud solution, part of the technical responsibility shifts to the cloud provider, particularly with regard to infrastructure, data center operations, certifications, encryption, and backup strategies. Companies should therefore assess how regulatory requirements—such as those related to data protection, financial data, or industry-specific compliance standards—are met within the respective cloud model. Regardless of this, issues such as authorization concepts, role models, segregation of duties, and internal control systems remain the responsibility of the company, particularly in the FI/CO environment. A well-thought-out security and governance strategy is therefore an integral part of every SAP S/4HANA transformation.
Greenfield refers to a complete new implementation of SAP S/4HANA. Processes, structures, and customizations are rebuilt from scratch and consistently aligned with the standard.
Brownfield describes the technical conversion of the existing SAP ECC system to SAP S/4HANA, whereby processes and structures are largely carried over.
In addition, there is the Bluefield approach, which combines both models: Selected data and processes are migrated in a targeted manner and redesigned as needed.
